A good friend of mine, an old chap called Alf, who's family worked as farm hands on the south Downs here in Sussex for many generations, used to refer to cows as Dummocks (and Oxeye Daisies as Bachelor's Buttons). I think his heritage was Irish, which might link with Pam's comment above.
